PORTFOLIO 2

While serving as elected officer, in several positions, of the Silicon Valley Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication, STC, from 2001-2007, Beau Cain was asked to develop and teach adult education courses for San Jose State University's Professional Development Center, SJSU-PDC. He drew from his varied experiences writing for many different companies in Silicon Valley and Houston, Texas, to develop Building Books With Microsoft Word in 2002. The challenge was to teach how to use MS Word to format printed, bound volumes that would be as reliable and usable as documents created using the (then) industry-standard Adobe FrameMaker.

He presented intensive seminars on the subject at STC chapters in California and Houston, and at STC's Region 7 conferences in Salt Lake City, Utah, and in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2006. From his detailed knowledge of word processing and how to use style guides, Cain developed templates for others to use to quickly produce consistently usable online and printed manuals. He has since translated that skill to OpenOffice Writer, LibreOffice Writer, and Google Docs, with which he produces both online and printed, bound volumes.

Cain also researched the history of white papers and taught Writing White Papers For Product Development and Sales at SJSU-PDC starting in 2002. He also condensed the course for presentations at several California STC chapters, and at STC's annual Technical Communication Summit in Baltimore, Maryland.

Cain currently enjoys exercising his literary skills for Morrison Literary Services.
